No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
