Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes
The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
