Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
